In quel ben nato, avventuroso giorno
ch'amor agli occhi mei sì vago apparse
e di novella fiamma il mio cor arse
vidi ir per terra (o chi mel crede?) un sole
e co' bei piedi ornarla d'ogni intorno,
fortunato soggiorno,
di pallidette e candide viole;
ond'io, ch'udiva il suon de le parole
e vedea 'l raro portamento adorno,
l'odor seguendo e la bell'aria e 'l nome
senti' legarmi dalle sparte chiome.

On that noble, fortunate day
when such happy love appeared to my eyes
and my heart burned with a new flame,
I saw walking upon the earth (who would believe me?) a sun
with her feet adorning all around her,
(O fortunate sojourn!)
amongst pale and pure violets;
Whereupon I, hearing the sound of her words,
and seeing her rare, graceful appearance,
following her fragrance and her fair expression and name,
felt myself bound by her unloosened tresses.
