General Information
Title: Inviolata
Composer: Heinrich Isaac
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 5vv Voicing: STTTB
Genre: Sacred, Motet
Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella
First published: 1508 in Motetti a cinque libro 1 (Ottaviano Petrucci), no. 7
Description: Published by Petrucci, Venice, 1508. The plainchant appears as a cantus firmus both in the lowest voice and, in canon, an octave higher. As the canon is more alternating than overlapping, the resultant texture is mostly four-part rather than five. The ostensible pitch is very low, with the bottom part in F5 clef. Curiously, this part is designated as 'Contratenor primus'. Presumably the part in the missing partbook would have been Contratenor secundus, although without a doubt written in a higher range than the 'primus'.
