Various devotions to Our Lady of Sorrows can be traced to the founding of the Servite Order
in 1237, with local Feasts of the "Compassio", "Transfixio", "Commendatio, Lamentatio B.M.V." "Spasmi B.M.V.", "B.M.V. sub pede Crucis" on various dates. In 1727 Septem dolorum B.M.V. on the Friday of passion Week was made universal. A second Feast on the 3rd Sunday of September dates to 1688. In 1912 the date of Memoria Beatae Mariae Virginis Perdolentis was fixed at September 15, replacing the Passion Week observance and replacing the Octave of the Nativity of the BVM.
